What is a freshwater pearl?

Freshwater pearls are pearls that are farmed and created using freshwater mussels. The majority of freshwater pearls produced today come from the Hyriopsis Cumingi species. Freshwater pearls are not bead-nucleated and are therefore typically less round. The unique culturing method used to create freshwater pearls means that freshwater pearls will never produce a perfectly round pearl, making each pearl completely unique and one-of-a-kind.

Freshwater pearls are durable in nature. If cared for properly, they will retain their original colour and luster for decades to come. Keep reading to find our more on how to care for your pearl jewellery.
