New Zealand Greenstone Huia Feather 87mm
Pounamu (Greenstone) plays an important role in Māori culture and is considered a treasure (taonga). The most prized taonga are those with known histories going back many generations. Greenstone is usually carved into traditional Māori symbols, and is often presented as gifts to visitors or to Kiwis moving overseas.
The huia feather is a significant symbol for the Maori and revered as a real treasure. It symbolises leadership and mana. The tip of a huia feather is white shown here with textural variation. For this reason, it is carved out of the deepest and best dark green jade.
