Graeme Wylie (the carver of this piece) trained in Hokitika on the West Coast under one of New Zealand’s leading greenstone carvers of the time. His workshop is now based in Akaroa on Banks Peninsula. With over 25 years of carving experience, Graeme has developed a deep respect and admiration for Māori culture, inspiring him to create beautiful works of art based on traditional designs. Graeme has an innate ability to “feel” the stone and intuitively understand how to bring out the best in each piece. His distinctive style and connection to the stone have seen his work recognised internationally. In 2002, Graeme won a prestigious award at the Mana Pounamu New Zealand Jade Exhibition in Greymouth.
